How to use Word Counter
- 1
Paste your text or start writing.
- 2
See word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts update.
- 3
Use the estimated reading time to plan your content.
Reading time is an estimate based on 200 words per minute. Word and sentence counts use simple text boundaries and may differ across languages.
When to use this tool
Check the length of a draft, description, or assignment without sending the text to a server. Counts update as you type. The tool treats whitespace-separated text as words, counts Unicode code points as characters, and separates paragraphs at blank lines. These practical rules may differ from a publishing platform’s own limits.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
Checking a short phrase
- Start with
- Hello world!
- What to expect
- 2 words, 12 characters including the space, and 11 characters without spaces.
Get a better result
- Use the destination platform’s counter for a strict limit, especially when your text contains emoji or languages without spaces.
- Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and rounds up. It is a planning estimate rather than a measurement of every reader.
Common questions
Why does another app show a different character count?
Apps can count bytes, UTF-16 units, Unicode code points, or visible character groups differently. Some emoji contain several code points.
Does a new line start a new paragraph?
A blank line separates paragraphs in this tool. A single line break remains within the same paragraph.
