Counting words and characters
Why counters disagree
There is no single rule used by every counter. ToolRino trims the text and treats each run of non-whitespace characters as one word. That makes the behavior predictable:
- Hyphenated terms: well-known counts as one word because there is no whitespace inside it.
- Dashes without spaces: yes—but counts as one word. Adding spaces creates separate whitespace-delimited words.
- Numbers and dates: 12/05/2026 counts as one word.
- URLs and email addresses: each counts as one word when it contains no spaces.
For an assignment, application, or publishing system with a strict limit, use the counter the recipient will use for the final check. ToolRino is useful for drafting and seeing whether you are comfortably within range.
Characters with and without spaces
ToolRino counts Unicode code points rather than JavaScript UTF-16 code units. An accented letter such as é and a simple emoji usually count as one. Some visible emoji, including flags and family or skin-tone sequences, combine several code points and therefore count as more than one.
The Characters total includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. The Without spaces total removes Unicode whitespace first. Platforms can instead count code units, bytes, or visible grapheme clusters, so test text close to a hard limit in its final destination.
Reading-time estimate
The estimate divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next whole minute. Empty text shows zero. Dense technical writing may take longer, while a reader scanning for one fact may finish sooner, so treat the number as a rough planning guide.

The four transformations
UPPERCASE
Converts every cased letter to its uppercase form.
lowercase
Converts every cased letter to its lowercase form.
Sentence case
Lowercases the input, then capitalizes its first letter and letters after a period, exclamation mark, or question mark followed by whitespace.
Title Case
Lowercases the input, then capitalizes letter starts after whitespace.
Why title case varies
Editorial style guides use different rules for articles, conjunctions, prepositions, and proper names. ToolRino does not choose a style guide for you. Its simple rule producesA Guide To The New Rules, after which you can adjust small words to match the publication or organization you are writing for.
The converter also cannot recognize acronyms and brand spellings. Lowercasing and then title-casing NASA produces Nasa. Always review names, abbreviations, and language-specific capitalization before publishing.

Why meaningless copy can help
Lorem Ipsum is altered Latin-looking text commonly used as temporary copy. Because its meaning does not demand attention, it can help you inspect line length, spacing, columns, hierarchy, and typographic color during early layout work.
Realistic content becomes more useful as the design develops. Actual headlines, names, numbers, and paragraph lengths expose wrapping and overflow problems that repeated placeholder passages cannot reveal.
What this generator produces
Choose from 1–20 paragraphs. ToolRino cycles through three prepared passages, so outputs longer than three paragraphs repeat. The generator is intended for layout testing, not for producing unique editorial content.
Replace every placeholder before publishing. Searching the finished project forlorem is a quick final check that temporary copy has not reached the live page.

Why is this word count different from Microsoft Word or another app?
Counters can apply different rules to hyphenated terms, punctuation, numbers, URLs, and languages without spaces. ToolRino counts each run of characters separated by whitespace as one word. For a strict submission limit, use the counter the recipient will use.
Do emoji count as one character?
A simple emoji usually counts as one here because ToolRino counts Unicode code points. A flag, family emoji, skin-tone sequence, or another visible symbol assembled from several code points can count as more than one.
Does the character count include spaces?
The Characters total includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. The separate Without spaces total removes Unicode whitespace before counting.
How is reading time calculated?
ToolRino divides the word count by 200 words per minute, rounds up to the next whole minute, and shows zero for empty text. It is a planning estimate rather than a measurement of every reader.
Why does title case not match my style guide?
The converter lowercases the input and capitalizes a letter at the start or after whitespace. It does not implement AP, Chicago, APA, MLA, or another editorial style, so review small words, punctuation, and names yourself.
Why does the converter change NASA to Nasa?
The converter applies a mechanical capitalization rule and cannot identify acronyms, product names, or proper nouns. Review the result before replacing the original text.
Why do Lorem Ipsum paragraphs repeat?
The generator cycles through three prepared passages and lets you request 1–20 paragraphs. It does not create randomized or unique prose.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All three text tools run in your browser. ToolRino does not transmit, log, or store the text you type, paste, convert, or generate in them.
