How to use Base64 Encoder / Decoder
- 1
Paste plain text to encode, or a Base64 string to decode.
- 2
Choose Encode or Decode.
- 3
Copy the resulting text.
Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. This tool supports standard Base64 and UTF-8 text, not arbitrary binary files.
When to use this tool
Convert text into Base64 for a system that expects an ASCII representation of UTF-8 bytes, or read a Base64-encoded text value. Encoding is reversible and provides no secrecy. This tool works with text, not arbitrary binary files, so a valid Base64 string can still fail to decode if its bytes are not valid UTF-8.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A simple round trip
- Start with
- hello
- What to expect
- Encoding produces aGVsbG8=. Decoding aGVsbG8= produces hello.
Get a better result
- Keep required = padding at the end of a standard Base64 value. Whitespace is removed before validation.
- URL-safe Base64 uses a different alphabet. Convert it to standard Base64 before using this decoder; do not paste an entire JWT as one value.
Common questions
Is Base64 suitable for hiding passwords?
No. Anyone can decode Base64 without a key. It is not password hashing or encryption.
Can I encode emoji and accented text?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes first, so supported Unicode text can be recovered by decoding the result.
