Good to know

This tool encodes individual URL components, including reserved characters. It does not preserve the structure of a whole URL. A plus sign is treated literally, not as a space.

When to use this tool

Prepare a value for a URL parameter or read a percent-encoded string. The encoder uses component encoding, so punctuation that separates parts of a complete URL is encoded too. Paste a parameter value rather than a whole URL when you want to preserve the URL’s protocol, path, and query structure.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Encoding a search phrase

Start with
red & blue
What to expect
Encoding produces red%20%26%20blue. This can be used as one query parameter value.

Get a better result

  • Do not encode an already encoded value twice unless the receiving system specifically expects that.
  • Decoding requires complete percent escapes. A trailing % or invalid UTF-8 sequence produces an error.

Common questions

Why does a plus sign stay a plus when decoding?

This tool uses decodeURIComponent semantics. It treats + literally; it does not implement form decoding where + represents a space.

Does URL encoding make a link safe?

No. Encoding represents characters; it does not verify a destination or remove malicious content.
